i have a softy and i don't like him, hes mean, but to look at hes interesting and fast. i would just go buy a 12 incher and throw him in, goldfish aren't that cool anyway.
i think they are way to fast a and weary to ever be caught, they are always a short scoot from the water and quickly dash to the bottom.
they're definitely one of the least social of turtles but will quickly learn the "swim on the glass" habits that others do, so he'll figure out that humans mean food soon enough.
