Or is it a Venezuala?

Is there any way to determine sex at this size?

Any tips on keeping this fish? Any ideas on the likelihood of this fish getting along with the other fish in my 125 (stocklist in sig) long-term? Growth-rate?

This is my first pike, and any info/suggestions would be appreciated:)

At that size, determining sex is pretty much pointless....have no idear. It looks like its Crenicichla sp.'venezuela' though. Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' is often sold as strigata, heckel, lugubris, and the like. Normally 'true' strigata will have an ocelli behind the pectoral fin...;). Its possible though as they look very similar as juv. to a certain extent.

You should be alright with most of those fish in your 125gal. Main ones would be the senegals and the clown loaches, they don't grow very fast, its possible the pike might out distance them and possibly eat them.

Yeah, I read that Venezuela are often sold as Strigata, so no suprises there. I have only had this fish for 2 days and am already loving it.

I have never seen a fish, especially at this size, gulp down frozen silversides like this.

Crenicichla are a trip. Love them! Glad you are pleased with it! It will definately grow into an impressive fish, 16" + being recorded in captivity. THICK too! Pretty soon you'll have more tanks with different types of pikes, they are VERY addicting! ;)

i find about the easiest way to identify a ven compared to the other similar looking juvi pikes is just how much you pay. if it seems like a really good deal, its a venezuela until proven otherwise!

I traded in my barracuda and I got the pike and some cash:). The pike was priced at $25.

I have read about some pikes being reluctant to eat pellets. I dropped some pellets in the tank tonight, and this guy attacked them big time!

That is great that he went for the pellets right away. That is always good. Not all will convert that quickly.
