hello everyone, I was just wondering if a 120 gallon or 125 gallon would work better for a jaguar cichlid. I was thinking the 120 since it is wider and would have more room for the fish to turn around in but... has a smaller floor print than the standard 125. 48x24x24 or 72x18x21 are the sizes I'm talking about. a single wet pet. thanks for any feed back. I know this has probably been asked before...jeff

125g definitely, but a 150g would be even better = 72x24 footprint

I feel like you should approach it the same way you approach housing a Dovii. I know Managuense don't get quite as large, but my mind keeps going back to that picture that has circled around MFK of the full grown Managuense in a 180. The fish looked like it was swimming in a puddle.

Welcome to MFK G glassjeff :) if you plan on keeping just 1 jaq by itself the 120 or 125 will be fine but like stated the bigger the aquarium even better.

Have you considered any other members of the parachromis group? friedrichthrali (spelt wrong)
Springs to mind, a little smaller but just as impressive.

A 72" long 24" wide 150 may be tough to come by. Most 150s are 72 x 18 or 48 x 24 and 30 high. Standard 180 is 72 x 24 which would be a great choice. If you are between a 125 or 120 I would go with the 6' 125. A 60" 120 is another option but they are still only 18" wide. I'm assuming you are going for a male. A female would likely top out at 12"-14". If you are worried about the width of an 18" tank with a large male then he should be in a tank longer than 4' anyway. That is why I am suggesting the 6' 125 over the 4' 120. I have only kept loisellei of the Parachromis genus but over the years I have typically seen 14"-18" adult males. However they have been known to grow 20"+ but it seems to be less often. Best of luck.

A female be ok, in the 125, I would not go with a 48" tank, for male really looking to a 145 or 180.
