Hey everyone! long time no see

I'm thinking of setting up a large tank when I move to Canada within the coming months and I been thinking alot lately about what to get, I have decided that I'm going to give africans another try.

I know all about them so not like I am a noobie, but i have an interesting question....

What non-African cichlids do you guys keep in the same tank?
Ive seen some crazy mixes work but i'm after some general advice

I'm thinking something large and herbivorous , Let me know guys!

This is def. not something I would recommend at all and it really depends on the type of African you are keeping, it may be helpful to let us know what you are looking to keep.

As for me personally the only non african I have ever mixed in with no issues is a smaller datnoid.

I've mixes africans with non-africans in many occasions, although it depends on which species you're considering. Personally, mbuna are the ones I would personally not mix with most other things. But, I've been able to mix some haps with CA and some SA cichlids with no issues.

I have my Mbuna's mixed with red acara AND convicts and I have no issues whatsoever. I wouldn't reccomend it under normal circumstances, but since your asking, this works for me. I have found however that fish have their own agenda's and personality, so what works for me and my fish may well go horribly wrong for you. Just keep that in mind...

Exactly, you see its not like im rushing out to buy them, im merely doing some research.
Nobody will judge you guys, even if its a crazy mix i just want to know :)

the datnoid idea sounds cool, i see alot of LFS mix africans with bloodparrots, is that normal?

I don't mix the two... but then again, don't really keep very many non-rift lake fish.

The most common non-cichlids that I see kept with Africans are clown loaches, plecos, large barbs and rainbows.

Mixing in new world cichlids with Africans tends to be hit-or-miss.

i've been having luck with my 120 gallon with a 9 inch mayan cichlid, two salvini (one is 7 inches, the female is 3-4... every once in a while they'll eat someone... removing them soon) a 8 inch venustus, and mixed mbuna. i think the only way i got away with this is because the first fish in the tank were a featherfin syno, the mayan, and six young kennyi, about half the size of the mayan. that way the mayan was able to learn the sneaky tricks of the africans and established himself as the dominant fish. he cant stand fighting, sothe only time he does is to break up two other fish or using his size to intimidate the africans.

if you want to mix SA/CA and African, i would reccomend starting with a docile CA cichlid (since many actually seem to prefer high ph) like a mayan, and a few africans about half the size of the CA so they can learn from each other. once you see less fighting, try putting in the rest of the africans you want. good luck! any questions?

I've kept a pike cichlid in with mbuna and peacock (i was a noob and didn't realize the mbuna would bully the peacock non stop, then again my Kenyi was named stalin cuz of how it terrorized everything) but then when i put the pike cichlid in the aggression vanished, weird... I guess it became leader but didn't terrorize others...

There is guy on here that has one of the best looking african tank tanks I've seen. He has some beautiful brackish fish in there like scats, monos and puffers. He says they all get along fine. I'll try and find his tank for ya.
