Some advice :) non africans with africans

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have Venustus in my Flowerhorn/parrot tank. The Venustus are in there as dithers though. (They've killed everything else I've tried using)

That's a very nice tank. But Scats and Monos need brackish to be healthy long term. It may all look good, but it's detrimental to the fishs' health.

IMHO Rift Valley Cichlids are best kept on their own. They need hard alkaline water. Even Mbuna shouldn't be mixed with Haps due to their different dietary requirements.

Thats my 175g bowfront with the Mono's, Scats, Puffers and Cat Sharks. All is still working well. As far as water chemistry goes I add 1tbl sp of salt and 1tsp of baking soda per 10g. So the water has some salt content.

I have 20 mbunas and 2 bristle noses in a 55 with an FX5 and 2 sponges running. I have no aggression troubles, as there is always someone bigger to swoop in and stop anything out of the ordinary. Do you think I'm overstocked, for a 55? How many fish total are in your 175? I know mine will grow and will move them up to my 125 someday, but do you think my numbers are okay now? I do a 40-50% water change once a week. Your tank is totally beautiful by the way!

Thanks!!! There are about 75 in my 175 right now, probably 60-65 of those are africans. My tank before this was a 55g of mixed malawi. I had about 30 adults (including 4 parrot fish) in there with no problems as long as I kept up with water changes. My filtration at the time was an AC70, Fluval 405 and an fx5. So from my experience I think you will be fine....I am sure others will disagree.

I have oscars, a Jack Dempsey and a Diadema with 3 frontosas. No problems at all. The only new world I have ever successfully kept with mbunas are convicts.
