Maybe you could setup an additional filter on the 40 for now or something?

Thats a great idea, it will seed more media and you can use it when you upgrade.

Good idea!

I am using a whisper 40 filter on it. I have an extra though, I can hook that up too. As far as the 150 gallon for the future...I am still doing research on what the best one is, filter. Any recommendations?

id throw a hob filter, and up your waterchanges. just get a good freshwater test kit (not the strips-they are not that accurate and over time moisture getting in the container gives you false readings) and just test your levels religiously. you could like someone else said get rid of the pleco-they are just poop machines and you can get another once you move.
if you are doing a 150 gallons later this summer, the 40 gallon might fit under it to use as a sump! that would be great! i have a sump on my 180 and love it! i also have a canister under it (i overstock my fish though). id definately convert that 40 into a sump, it would be easy to do..

Thank you everyone!
The thought of getting rid of my pleco makes me sad... :( i will up my water changes.
Turning the 40g into a sump later is a good idea!

Is it a common pleco? I would wait until you move. My 150 gallon was very hard to get in the house and just the thought of having to move that again is making me cringe. You should go with an acyrilic tank when you upgrade, beleive me it will save you a lot of headaches.

Yeah its a common pleco. I think I will wait too...and as everyone has suggested do even more water changes. :)

I would wait until you move.. they still have lots of room to grow and if it is only a few months until you can upgrade better to leave them settled and happy then move them 2x's.... Sounds like they will have a great home soon.

Thanks! Yeah the more I have thought about it, the more I agree I will wait. It's only 3 months away anyway until I move. Plus the new house is aaaa lot bigger...more room for bigger tanks..yay! :)

What size tank were you thinking of upgrading to? Depending on who is doing the lifting there isnt much difference in moving a 40 and a 125.... Thats been my experience at least.

.. wha??? a 40g you can move alone with a car. A 125G you'll need 3 strong men and a truck.
