:iagree: You definatly found the right spot to start though. Everrrything you need to know is on mfk. 12.5 is a pretty small tank, you can keep some things (not much) in there. Technically there are a few fish to keep in there but its not fair to the fish you kno? Puffers are cool but it would probably have to be brackish tank (someone can correct me if Im wrong, I believe just about all are best kept brackish?) I understand your just starting and a 55 seems like a big one though. my brother had had fish before but not in years he started back with a 55, and hes doin good. Hes on MFK as well. You can start with like a 40 or so? Were you thinkin on makin this like a hobby you want to get into or more like, I need somethin to look cool for a little bit in my room? like where did you wanna go with it? and have you had a tank before?

well actually i was around fish when i was young because my brother had them and now im becoming facinated with them too, but i think i should get a bigger tank, and yes i think its becoming a hobby cause i volunteered at a local petstore for like 5 years and worked for 2

As long as this is a heated tank you can go with dwarf gouramis, or combtail paradise fish, in general any of the smaller gouramis are a good choice for beginners.

Corydoras, killifish, tetras, danios, barbs, rasboras, otos, dwarf puffers, guppies and gouramis. Pick your choice.:) Whichever you pick, I can give you a list of what will fit your tank best.:)

:iagree::iagree:

Dwarf puffers are a bit intense for someone just starting out with their first tank.

well i like gouramis, theyer nice fish...and i think im gonna sell this tank and buy a 50 gl because thats what everyones been telling me to do so i can appreciate the hobby....do u kno anything about discus? i heard theyer fragil

Discus are not relly fragil, however they do need very clean pristine water, warmer temps then most fish and high quality foods. As long as your willing to devote the time and tank to them they are great to have.

I wouldn't believe in such general statements. Ask people for their experiences instead of letting these phrases get into your way. If you are thinking of the various color morphs of discus, they are far easier to keep than the wild ones as they have been bred in captivity and are adapted to various water conditions as long as acclimated properly. My advice is to buy the biggest discus you can afford. Adults are far easier to keep than juveniles. If you stick with the latter, prepare a barebottom tank and keep things simple. Do plenty of water changes and feed them several times keeping temperature constant at 84-86 degrees.

Change that to 'keep the little tank and buy a 50gal as well' ;)

Having an extra small tank is very usefull for quarantine, hospital, breeding purposes, and doesn't take up much extra room.

You will find that most folks here have a variety of tanks of different sizes. The smaller tanks are fine.. for smaller fish ;)

Lots of small fish like have been suggested above that will be fine in a small tank, or a big one for that matter :D

Cheers

Ian

I have to agree with the suggestion of some dwarf puffers... maybe even a figure 8 puffer. I had one in a 10 gal, and I LOVED to watch him. LOTS of personality. Throw a couple snails in there (if you keep planted tanks later, you will have plenty of snails) and watch the assault. They hover like little helicopters and then, BANG!! No more snail.

IMO, puffers are not the beginner fish

I would say some tetras, nice guppies, or some corys

OR

You can grow out a small fish and then get a bigger tank like I did..

I had 6 Jack Dempseys in a 10 gallon, and then when I got to a 55 gallon, I left myself with two
