Change that to 'keep the little tank and buy a 50gal as well' ;)

Having an extra small tank is very usefull for quarantine, hospital, breeding purposes, and doesn't take up much extra room.

You will find that most folks here have a variety of tanks of different sizes. The smaller tanks are fine.. for smaller fish ;)

Lots of small fish like have been suggested above that will be fine in a small tank, or a big one for that matter :D

Cheers

this site man! look in the cichlid section, you could get lost for weeks in all the info on here.

This forum is half based on cichlids! Not really, but a large mjority of members here keep them. The cichlid section is all you'll need.

they're brackish(part freshwater, part salt water)

no, dwarf puffers do poorly in brakish, or just die.
they are full freshwater.
My bad though, probibly not the best beginner fish.

And cichlids do come in small sizes too. You could keep Kribensis or Rams in that tank and move them to the bigger tank when you get it. They aren't monster fish, but have plenty of cichlid character and are suitable for beginners. Great in a 50gal community tank, and if they pair up you can breed them in the smaller tank.
