Ok so I'm moving into an apartment in a rural area and was wondering if you guys could help me decide what kind of dog to get. It's on a 50 acre horse ranch. I'm a pretty serious runner so I need a a dog that handle the miles. I also like to do some hunting. I'll be in PA. I was looking at vizslas, dogos, salukis, and some collies. I love my collie lab mix right now but she's older and slowing down. Any suggestions? I got to dog sit two vizslas so I've seen them.

I wouldn't suggest any gaze hound ie Saluki et al if you want a dog to accompany you on your runs. You want a dog to run with you not a dog you have to run after. Think along the lines of a well bred Dalmation bred to run as a carrage dog etc. It will have more than enough stamina and stay with you.

Cattle dog will be able to handle a good run. Doberman, Aussie, boarder collie are also good choices. IMO a dogo gets too big to be a running companion.

Get a big (70-90 pounds) Chocolate Lab. Train it to retrieve, even if you never use it to retrieve birds in the field. Lab's need meaningful work to do, and they love to bring things back. Train them to do that, they will be very happy. Put your lab in water and let him swim several times a week, too. Deep water. Don't have to train him too much, just "sit", "no", "heel", and "fetch". That's it. No cute tricks, no advanced hand signals for field trials, just those 4 basic commands, lots of "fetch", and lots of swimming, you'll have a fine animal. Only problem with a Lab is they NO concept of "protect" or "guard". Some don't even bark when strangers come to the door. They're very friendly, genuinely like people.

A boxer is another good running companion. My old roommate had one that would find the end of the rainbow if we let him.

I think I may end up going with an Aussie. I can't have dobermans, husky, pit, or Dalmatians (they're restricted). I only hunt deer and smaller but I have been looking into big game hunting but that isn't going to happen until later in life so the dogo is out. Since the property isn't enclosed the saluki is out cause it would get run over. I run 80+ miles a week so working the dog isn't an issue. So why do you guys think now now that some of the breeds I crossed off or are restricted?

Then look at Brittney Spanials, they have great endurance make good general purpose hunting dogs (they generally range close staying under the gun) for upland game on foot. They are good family pets too. A German Short hair is also a good choice but are a little more hyper (generally) an harder to train (more indpendent).

I love Boxers but they are too deep chested for what you are looking for IMO. Why would a Dalmation be restricted?
