Some dog choice ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Then look at Brittney Spanials, they have great endurance make good general purpose hunting dogs (they generally range close staying under the gun) for upland game on foot. They are good family pets too. A German Short hair is also a good choice but are a little more hyper (generally) an harder to train (more indpendent).

I love Boxers but they are too deep chested for what you are looking for IMO. Why would a Dalmation be restricted?

I used to work at a animal shelter and they are a commonly restricted breed in apartments for some reason

I have no idea and thought the same thing. When I move in I'll ask them why. Can't wait for the reasoning lol. Thanks

I wouldn't suggest any gaze hound ie Saluki et al if you want a dog to accompany you on your runs. You want a dog to run with you not a dog you have to run after. .................
SO true & too funny.
also avoid irish Setters. hehe

If your dog could get any access to the horses, and you've never owned dogs with stock working instincts, avoid those breeds-aussies, border collies etc., they have a drive to work. the property owners will hate a dog bothering the horses. and some of those dogs will be frustrated if they can see, but not go after livestock.
Bad breeding has left the chasing in many lines, but not gathering instincts.

Get a vizsla, mine runs for hours and hours, and they always stay close. They call them velcro dogs for a reason

I'd go with the Aussie myself. Family got one when I was a teenager, she's still around and is a great dog. High energy, loves to run, but great off switch. Very loyal and loving, lots and lots of personality. Will still alert to anyone approaching the house.
She does have a prey drive, fast enough to have caught some small birds in the backyard over the years. That probably could have been channeled into something more productive if needed. Something to consider. Her herding instincts are there, but anytime she has been around livestock she has been respectful.
Very trainable, "relieves" herself on command, picks up things quick, identifies different toys by name.

The thing about dogs is everyone has different experiences and opinions. We have had 2 labs, still have one actually (best friends with the Aussie). Both great dogs, not working lines so I can't comment on that aspect.

You my want to look up the rhodesian ridgeback. There a hunting breed that are also known as great running companions. I have been very interested in this breed for a long time. Like most of the breeds you are thinking about they can be very strong willed so constant positive reinforcement in a must. The ones I have met have been great dogs and I love their look with the ridge along their back!

Just thought id throw another option out there for you. Good luck with whichever breed you choose!!

Yeah I'm a little worried if the ACD would snap or not at the horses, but the ranch is actually my gf's parents and they have a collie and lab/Aussie shep mix which don't bother the horses. I read that ACD are solitary which brings up the concern with the other dogs. My apartment is 5 mins from the ranch which is where I'll be spending a lot of time helping out. Idk what to get yet but I have plenty of time to figure it out and make the best decision (until my Eskimo dies). My collie/lab will need another companion because all she knows is being with him and cries when he isn't around. I would hate for her to go into depression. thanks everyone for the input I appreciate it!

Ridgebacks are awsome, but what is it you are planning on hunting with one?
