yeah, noticed the little one in the pic. They are such cool geese, it's their necks I think.

Do the hawksbill breed on those beaches?

From what I understand they do. There is signs saying they do.

Those are green sea turtles. Not hawksbill.

Hawksbill will be smaller (125lbs at maturity) have a flatter shell, have overlapping scutes, a more colorfull shell, and the charasteristic beak.

I lived in Manoa for a few years and dealt a bit with doing FPV counts with greens.

Great photos. Almost makes me miss Oahu.

I always thought they were greens too. They posted signs on the beach stating that they are hawksbill turtles and only hawksbill come on the beach. Through all the years I have gone there these are the same turtles. I actually recognize certain ones from 15 years ago. One of my friends had named them all and there was one that if he went out in the water and taped on the water in a certain place and yelled its name it would always come to him. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen and I saw him do it 4 or 5 times. One time only the turtle did not come. It was always the same one too. Very interesting. They are by far my favorite aquatic animal. I think I need to go talk to the county about those signs.

Awesome!! It's always awesome to see endangered sp. ! You never know if it will be your last. And Always find yourself hoping they make a comeback..

Well I do..

Is Punalu'u Kona side or Hilo side? From what I heard while doing FPV counts on Oahu, is that on the Hilo side most greens have FPV while almost none on the Kona side do. Has to do with pollutants in the water.

The bit about the signs cracks me up, they're obviously greens and anyone who knows anything about sea turtles (the people who put up the signs) should know that.

It's on the Hilo side. well actually it is about the southernmost area of the united states so a bit outside of Hilo. About 45 minutes outside of Hilo. These all have FPV I think.

I'm glad you brought that up about the signs. I want to make a deal about it now.

Mahalo for the comment!:D

What beautiful view! Why do the turtles come up on shore? Is it for laying eggs?

From what I understand they do that too but they do that at night. They come up on he beach everyday to warm up and then they go back in a couple hours later. It as turned into a huge tourist attraction. You can't tell but there were hundreds of tourist taking pics also.

Thanks for the comment!:headbang2:headbang2
