Thanks for the tips. What do you mean by pinching the seal? And did the lid on yours sit fully flush with the canister? I just don't know how to get it down all the way. I press with all my strength and still there's that gap. ?
Either the seal is twisted or not fully in place in the filter head. Take the seal out and make sure when you reinstall it, it is setting flat in the groove.
Are you sure you don't have too much media in the filter baskets which is not allowing the baskets to stack properly?
I'll try that. Thank you. I don't think it's the media baskets because they're stacking fine I believe and I can't close the lid all the way even with the top basket removed. Unless it's not related to the lid gap at all. I didn't think to try turning the filter on with the top basket removed though so I'll try that too.
I tried all your suggestions folks and I think I figured out what the problem is. It's the motor head which isn't working properly. When I tried running it alone suspended in a bit of water, the impeller seizes up and doesn't turn continuously. I'm so frustrated with how much time I've spent trying to get this filter to work and now the replacement is $110. For a bit more I could buy another used filter altogether so can't decide whether I should invest in this one and hope the new motor head fixes the problem or whether I should try a different model. Should I maybe just put two Aquaclear 70s on my 75 gallon? I know they don't contain the same volume of filter media but at least they're so much easier to maintain. Plus I could add plants to them to suck up some nitrates.
Sorry about the filter. I would not put any more money into the used filter but if you have room you can store it or sell it for parts.
Double check if the AC 70 filter will fit on your tank trim before buying as sometimes the tank trim is thicker, especially on some brands or older tanks.
You could always bump up to the AC110 for now and when you get more cash, add a 2nd or find a used one.
You don't mention what fish your keeping in this tank or the quantity or size so that may impact your choice.
Does the 110 fit wider trims than the 70? Because that's a good suggestion. I forgot there was one bigger than the 70.
I have three 6" bichirs in this tank. I'm thinking of hooking up a small aquaponics grow bed to this tank at some point so that will also help with filtration. Though I liked the idea of a canister filter for the less frequent maintenance. =( I probably won't be able to afford one just now but what would be some other good canister filters I could try?
Yes the 110 fits better than the 70, I have/had one on both a 75G and a 220G tank.
So many different canister filter brands, sizes and prices but the only ones I've used are the Eheim Classic and a couple other models. Check out other posts on canister filter brands such as Oase, Sunsun, etc.
Honestly, I think you will be happy with the AC110. Easy to clean and probably cheaper than a canister.
Yes and I can buy one used and trust that it won't stop working on me when I bring it home. ☹
I appreciate everyone's advice and help though. Thank you.
Thought I'd update in case the information would be useful to anyone who has problems similar to mine. I was able to get the filter to work reasonably well after lubricating the gasket well so the lid could close fully.
