I received a nice gift from a friend last Sunday,
and it’s inspire me to clean at last all my killies tanks and make a looooong photo series of these my lovely pets….
shtrak.gif

I will begin with those two Killies specimens of the Nothobranchius family,
whose are a part of that gift - Nothobranchius Rachovii "Kruger National Park"
and Nothobranchius Rachovii Beira '98

Hey Bill (chubasco), where are you…!?
I hope you will enjoy with pleasure that Killies thread…:-)

I'm right here, Hristo! My God, those are some lovely photos! The detail, clarity, exposure...just perfect! The
first one you could easily sell to a fish hobbyist magazine. Thanks for sharing! :-)

Humm, part II? Where did I miss part I?

STUNNING!!

I am sure you get tired of this question, but can you please describe your set-up? I am new to this type of shooting. I just purchased a Canon 100mm macro and STE-2 TTL transmitter, + my 580EX flash.

Great shots Hristo! I'm not really into Killies myself, but did see a presentation this past spring from someone who had gone on a collecting trip to Eastern Africa (maybe Mozambique I don't remember) and collected a variety of different Nothobranchius. His presentation was on the Nothobranchius family. Very interesting and beautiful fish.

Hristo,

How close are you to the object ?

Photographs are nice but most of your pictures look like you are "zooming in" withing the software to get close-up presentation. Perfect example is picture of the fish #2. Nice close-up but there is very little details / sharpness above the head. Although picture of the fish #4 is little better but I see the same effect.

Are you using macro lens ? 60mm or 100mm ?

Bill, sorry, that name “Some Killies shots…(part I) ” was the threads name in some other forums…
here was “Rising Phoenix” : http://aquatic-photography.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5704

Hey, Bobby,
I’m very proud to hear such a compliment from you about my photos…:-P
I just follow your advises and your shared experience about shooting with 2 external flashes...

Hi, Jeff! It’s always pleasure for me to look at your great professional designs work commented here!
My favorite lens since the last months is EF 50 mm/f2.5 Compact-Macro lens,
but frankly speaking it is not really fast at focusing…:-/
I made my shots with Canon Speedlite 580EX situated over the tank,
wires connected with the camera in “master” mod
and Speedlite 430EX like straight “fill” flash (slave mod)…
The both are with diffuser…almost like Bobby’s situation:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/phishphorphun/PhisPhorPhun Phish Pix/2bFlashSetup032006.jpg
My usual settings:
Shutter Speed: 1/200 seconds
Aperture Value: f/14-22(dependent on the fish specific and fishes posission)
ISO Speed Ratings: 100-200(dependent on the fish specific)
Of course, using STE-2 TTL transmitter is more comfortable than the wires connection,
Especially, for the hole tanks shots…
But I’m not sure is it the Canon 100mm macro is better than 50mm…
Good luck, Jeff!

Hi, Jay
Yes, all the photos are a little cropped…
I’m not so good with the Photoshop like you,
and there is no much free time for me to do some special photo editing…
that because I send to you the original (RAW) of the photo #2(check your E-hotmail)
and be very curious to see your edition on its close up…
The details specific of these fishes is very unique, especially the orange/blue Nothobranchius…
The orange is very solid…the skin is like velvet… and the blue is very electric “shining”…
I had try to get some more details of it…even had to make some desaturation of the colors…
but as you will see –
The teeth are visible, but the skin could not be such a detailed…

That’s for now.
May be I’ll miss for a week, from tomorrow, because I’m going to visit the Chesh Aqua Festival’2006 (October 19 – 22) (Aqua Festival 2005)
I hope there will be much interesting things to see and photographing...
