Some more turtles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 RES and they are all males.
I do have a kiddie pool I will fill up in the summer and let them tool around in but 99% of the time they are inside. My UVA bulb burned out, I really need to buy a new one.
I don't feel comfortable keeping them in an outdoor pond though I have thought about that. For one, the temp up here (As you know) can be very unpredictable, thus the only months I would keep them out side is July and August. I have 2 Owls (Confirmed), raccoons, neighborhood cats & Possums to worry about too.

Yes the predators will take turtles unless you have a good raccoon proof cover over the kiddie pool, water trough.

Those here who have large deep ponds where racoons cant wade in and feel around don't lose turtles but in my case in a water trough I needed a tough screen and cable ties.

If it wasnt for the ball python size water snakes that I sometimes see in the yard would have gone with 1 inch gauge instead of 1/2 inch which in order to get a good view of the turtles you need to be right by the trough.

I plan to make a good cover that looks nice but this is raccoon proof and strong so will do for now.

I wish we had owls here my favorite bird . Incredible silent bird to see soaring at night. I have never seen any maybe to hot. I have seen lots of foxes in Long Island. You wont see them during day time but at off hours I have seen them and in fairly developed areas.

Reptomin and any Minnow they can catch.
They are the growing faster than my little Red Ears' and jump right in to the deep end during feeding time. It's funny to watch a 2.5" turtle beat a much larger turtle to the food!:D
They need more fiber and variety then that;) Ad some turkey, newly molt mealworms, grasshopers and earthworms. Its also time to start thinking about ading some dark leafy greens wich will be very inportant later. Ad a woule small leaf and let it float, they will soon catch the idea. But reptomin and zoomeds are good stables.

You dont need a specific uva lamp, most household lamps emit some uva and all uvb lamps emit significant uva rays. Go for a uvb bulb

Sorry, I disagree. Reptomin is perfect. Turtles do not need "variety", they need "Nutrition".

You could use wider spaced screen Louie. Snakes can still get through that mesh if they want to. Look at it this way: Free snakes!:D

I've seen an owl pick something off the ground. Like you said, total silence. I can't get a pic because it's dark enough to confuse the camera and it won't lock focus. One day...

I was wrong the water levels fo from 3 inches than 6 inches finally 8 inches .
The trough is on a slight incline and enough to make a nice difference. They are tiny so even at 3 inches they are fully submerged but able to stick their nose out.
As they get bigger will level out the incline so whole thing is 8 inches deep.

I used to watch huge owls just hang in the air like suspended w/o a sound. The most magnificent birds I have ever seen.
Here even with bats, etc all the available prey . I have never seen one and I look for them at night.

"Snakes can still get through that mesh if they want to. Look at it this way: Free snakes"

lol no you dont want these snakes they are super mean to the point if you surprise them not only will they not run they will get ready to strike.
There is a large female peacock that hangs out in my yard hours every day which will attack a large cat and it will not go near a water snake if it wonders in to the yard.
The turts are to small now but when they get bigger will get bigger gauge .
The big water snakes cant get in there only the thin harmless ringnecks . The head of the water snakes alone is twice as wide as the turts thus they would be eaten .

Yeah, water snakes are nasty!:D
In any case, I doubt a water snake would eat a turtle. Perhaps when the turtle is right out of the shell but I've never read/heard/seen that water snakes eat turtles.
I used to catch water snakes as a kid and never got them tame. They bite hard too.
