When i did water changes my self i changed 300 gallons a week to keep the water good. 1-2gph is not enough for the stock im keeping. The tank is 450g 3arowana 1clown 1redtail cat,1tsn

I adjust my trickle almost monthly. Fish are starting to eat more (summer) so I just went from 2 GPH to 3. I might bump that up more next month.

I have never changed that much water ever and my fish are very healthy and water is crystal. You are changing 1176 gallons a week! That is a 2.61 turnover rate a week. So it would be like doing 2.6 100% water changes a week. I do 25- 50% a week and my fish are mint. So yes you are wasting water IMO. The Max I would recommend is 2-3 gph with your tank size but it is up to you and your water bill. If your tank is overstocked and you overfeed and your filtration is under par than maybe you need it. Unless you have an orchard to water?

"Fish keeping" is wasting water. LOL That's why this is a hobby. If someone wants to change out 1167 gallons a week, great.
100% of my water is recycled to the lawn. I need to water the lawn more in the summer so I increase the trickle.
Personally I would only recommend a minim water change amount. Kinda like a BYOB party, no one ever said you brought too much beer
