a friend has a 5x3x3' marine reef tank, the stand is divided into 3 compartments.the new sump is to big to fit so he wanted to knock 2 into 1 big compartment, told him to re-brace the stand and offerd to do it for him.he said it'll be fine as it is with a divider and bracing missing, woke up this morning to find the stand had collapsed tank+contents everywhere:screwy:

It's too bad he didn't listen, but at least now he may start. So what did you say to him after? "I told you so!" or perhaps "dumbass!"

Were there any fish/corals involved?? Is your friend going to set up another one?

Wow, can't help feeling bad but at the same time, i wish he had listened. What fish did he have that obviously didn't make it?

Hello; There was a thread on this forum recently where a member had cut a portion of a center brace in order to fit a piece of equipment. A picture was posted. Some members suggested adding replacement bracing and others posted doubts about the stand being strong enough with the cutaway portion. Of course there were posts saying to go ahead, it will be fine.
I have noted that if someone starts a thread about such topics with questions like stand strength or can a huge tank be placed on a second floor, at some point posts appear which essentually say to go ahead or it will be fine. Often there will not be enough information, to my mind at least, to make such a determination.
My take on the commercial stands is that the builders are likely not to put material in place if it is not needed. Sad to hear about the loss of a tank.

People just dont understand how much a tank weighs, a 100gal can easily top 1000lbs. Mind boggling, although i always would rather be safe then sorry.

Op: thats a huge loss to him, i wouldnt rub it in his face too much!

you said you woke up to it if it was my house i would have stopped him or made him rebrace it

he woke up to it thank god, approx 100lb live rock,tangs,clownfish,chromis,mandarin+2k of coral all lost.best bit is he removed the divider by samashing it out with a hammer!

The thing I can't figure out is why the flip MDF aquarium stands exist. I'm an engineer/designer and work with MDF on a daily basis. To put it kindly its probably the weekest thing you could use and its extremely vulnerable to water. MDF will warp/sag without water or extreme wait over a period of 6-24 months if not adequately supported. Meanwhile cheap pine is So flipping strong per lbs its insane you'd eve consider using MDF. Note my tank pine stack:

nice tank, brains behind the build, if you havent figured out now things are built to fail, from cars to appliances, there all crap, the demand for fast and cheap outways the logic behind strong and more cost up front, however after picking up all your corals and jazz off the floor hopefully a lesson learned
