Fortunately, my area is BIG on fishkeeping, and I rarely encounter employees who don't know anything or people who won't listen to advice. IMO, if you're willing to listen to a knowledgeable employee, doing your research isn't always neccesary. Of course, you need to find smart employees first (I find the "any 10 gallon recommendations?" a good question for this purpose).
