looks like an armatus.

to the OP: i'm surprised you found a picture of a wild caught red tail (tatauaia), the 8th picture down.. almost 99% of the time we see pictures of armatus or the rhaphiodon vulpinus

Good question come to think of it.....It almost has a two tone look on the side of it's body and the tail seem a little small for an armatus.There is another payara that has not made it to the aquarium trade that I know of but resembles the others.I can't recall it's name though.
 
maybe it's the black armatus of the payara, like the black mbenga of the tiger fish lol kevin, the name ur thinking of is the wallacei i believe?

To be honest, didn't know of the red tail payara until now, maybe because it's rare?
 
used to be rarer.. lol it's more common now in the hobby. just never seem to come across any in fishing pictures
