From what I understand bowfins are obligatory air breathers meaning they have to come up for air. You can't use breathing bags since they are required to be filled with water. People have also had problems shipping them with pure O2 with no true explanation as to why the bowfin dies. Skipjack has come up with a pretty good method of shipping these fish and hasn't lost one yet with it so maybe he will chime in.

I shouldn't say they require special shipping, but they do require a greater effort.

Meepster, in most states you have to be licensed to sell these fish. I would check with your state regulations to avoid any possible issues.

Well I didn't know they HAD to come up for air. My bowfin does come up quite often though I guess. I don't plan on shipping that bad boy anyways though so it doesn't matter.

What is a needlenose gar? Longnose, or is it one of the tropical look alikes?

Does not matter much... none of those where longnosed or "Needlenose"

Looks like shortys to me aside from that last one that appears like it should be rotting on a shore bank.

It is Amazing the crap conditions that gar and Bowfin will survive in yet they will die off being shipped in plastic bags....go figure.

Dude, your getting these Gar in Mass too?Because i would want to makes shure it survived the trip ...boston is like an hour drive from me:D:D

"Needlenose Gar" is a tropical lookalike. It is also known as a needlefish. Not true gars.....

Needlenose gar is a common name for many fish both temperate and tropical..Freshwater and Marine. Usually this name applies to fishes in the family Belonidae .

It is however also sometimes used (in some areas) as a common name for Lepisosteus osseus (Longnosed gar) which is a True gar. Still not relivent though as none of those fish are L. osseus.
