what type of fish is the one in the first picture?

That's a Satanoperca Jurupari, aka Demon Eartheater. Alot of Stores label them Geophagus Jurupari, but that name was changed in the 80's I believe.

Nice little fish. Not only would filling it up look better but provides more swimming space and dilutes pollutants.

Good info. I'm going to add more water today when I do a wt. How high should I raise it?
 
Looks like a Satanoperca leucosticta, and I'd recommend moving it.

They need sand, do much better in shoals of at least 4 specimens, and are very peaceful fish. Flowerhorns, Gold Saums and Red Devils are far from peaceful. They're also very slow growers, so even though he might be 'surviving' or 'fairing' reasonably decently now, 3-4 months down the track it will be a different story.
