Check the dorsal, females will have a distinct black blotch or several black spots close together about the middle of the dorsal.
I just saw that Scott got in some more interesting crenicichla. Those cincta he has are tempting me. He also has some nice lenticulata in right now too.

I don't know if they were from the same group but I do believe that I have a large female. She has a group of small black dots/blotches that start in the middle, follows down the dorsal fin towards the tail, and stops 2" up or so before the tip of the dorsal fin ends. I was trying extra hard to get a pic of that but she wouldn't fan her dorsal fin long enough for me to take a picture. I will continue to try to take some pictures of that dorsal fin, the moment I do get a pic. I will share.
