some pond help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on the plant shelves? how deep is the pond? you could elevate the planters on blocks if you like. i personally dont like plant shelves as they take up too much swimming room for my big koi.

another option would be to just dig out an additional plant border if you have room. but then again you already ordered your liner and that prob wont work...

yeah already ordered liner and i dont want to fill in some of the sides to make shelves, then the pond is smaller..sigh:( the pond is 2-3 ft deep

for cleaning ponds i heard you could use some sort of hay that keeps ponds algae free. like one of those chlorine capsule dispensers in the pool, but with hay. GL

I always thought the same rule for maintenance for tanks applied for ponds? weekly water changes and sucking out the crap. but I may be wrong.

The types of fish you will have may determine if W/Cs are needed. I have never done a water change on my pond before. I do use pond water to water my garden, so every few days I need to top off w/new water, witch is basically a WC.

Thats what I have. How big is the pond? Sucking out the crap can be avoided w/plants. Now that my Hyacinths have filled my filter, I will stir the gravel from time to time. It makes the debris floating so it will get sucked in to the skimmer. As it leaves the bio-falls, the very fiborous roots of the hyacinth trap any particulates. I them remove clumps of plants and rinse them off in a bucket of water.

I don't know the size of my pond but it's not that big. I will take a pic of it. I think its like 13x10x3? im not positive, its pretty big i guess lol. im not done with it but ill go take a pic now. also, do i need a skimmer? if so what kind

i personally would never build another pond with a skimmer. I really like the No-Niche Skimmer as it can be installed before or after construction; doesnt have to be built in.

What I really like about it is that it skims at 360 degrees and it has a basket that adjusts based on your water level. that way, you could raise or lower the water level in your pond and the skimmer would still work. conventional skimmers have to be built in and your water level is set, which is usually several inches below the perimeter of the pond which look ugly IMO. and even better, its dirt cheap. see here:
