1. are "spotted gars" the same as "florida gars"?

2. how big do gator gars get in captivity?

3. how big do spotted gars get in captivity?

4. are gars compatible with asian arowanas (rtg's)?

thanks in advance to the gar masters!

1. there are differences. just not that many.
2. gator gars get to 4 or 5' in captivity.
3. Florida/Spotted gars get to about 16" to 18" maybe larger.
4. i have never really thought about it.
what is your tank size and what are your plans for gar?? whatever it is good luck.
if you need any more info im sure demjor or poly will help you out.

1) not much difference between florida and spotted, they look so very similar that unless someone knows the locality of the gar they can't be id'ed as of now

2) not sure about their size in captivity , zoodiver has been taking care of a few gators and one of them is supposed to be 4'+

4) floridas, spotted, tropicals can be kept with aros, many have done it here on MFK

hey thanks for your replies...i guess a spotted gar is better for my set-up. i just got a 180g tank for my rtg and I was thinking of having it with a gar and my dat community...but on second thought, i may just get a spotted gar and put it in a 75g tank with my pacus and silver dollars..

i saw these in nearby fish stores

gator gar about 8 inches long

spotted gar about 10 inches long

the gators is in such a small place
too bad
the spotted looks to have a nice pattern

do not keep gars with pacus as they may harass them and if the gars are frightened they may dash into the tank walls which may result in a broken back and may cause early death or paralysis to the gar
although you may keep the gar with the aro and the dats rather than the pacus

thanks for the heads-up about pacus.

last question: what are tropical gars?

do a search on google you will find enuff info on them
they are much more expensive than florida/spotted gars and much more good looking too :D

ive seen lots of photos with gars and rtg's so i would say your safe on the combo.... and atleast 2' for the spotted/florida gar

dont get the gator unless you have a pond or pool to put it in at later age. but i assume you already know this considering you posted the 3 foot gator thread. BTW poor gar. the F/S is much more suitable and should have plenty of room in your 180g.
