some questions about gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. are "spotted gars" the same as "florida gars"?
-they are different fish, but require identicle care

2. how big do gator gars get in captivity?
-i have heard that gator gar are capable of reaching 4-5 feet in captivity(from a reputable source).

3. how big do spotted gars get in captivity?
-from my experience and from others i have seen they are capable of reaching 18" easily with the potential to reach 24".

4. are gars compatible with asian arowanas (rtg's)?
-that all depends on the individual fish, but i would think you should be fine with asian aros.

Note: gator gar do NOT do well with tankmates.

Thanks, jordan! your replies have given me confidence in buying a spotted gar. I will post pics as soon as ive found a suitable sized gar

Gators will get too big for the tank and possible the aro... i'm not sure if he'll tolerate ur aro but if it is silver-ish he'd mostlikely attack it. i'd say ur best bet is the spotted pare.

as mentioned above...the 75 gallon tank is too small for any gar for life, but the 180 (assuming it's 6 x 2 x 2) will more than likely be suitable for most gar for life.
