hey guys i need some tips...

1) My arowana (silver) is not trained to eat pellets... What's the best food I can feed him as a staple? I have access to MP, SW, MW, crickets, centipede, frogs, feeder fish: ID shark, bullhead catfish, rasbora sp., guppies.. and ghost shrimp..

All the food listed can be swallowed by my aro he's big enough(13")
Which of these foods should be fed as a staple and how often does "staple" mean?

2)for 6'x4'x3' fiberglass tank should I choose black or white colour? and substrate i would like to use the cheapest kind of sand possible which I presume its normal light brown sand so should i buy black or white?

Thanks!!

out of those two choices, I say Black.

as for food, feed it as much as she will eat. This is how I feed all my monsters.

i wouldnt feed him the bullheads because they can sting him. well, thats one way to get him off of feeders. my jack dempsey that got stung by a baby bullhead hasnt touched a feeder since.

1. I will not recommend feeder fish as a staple and I am not entirely sure what "MP, SW and MW" mean.

In my opinion, the best staple (out side of pellets/dry food) is Market Shrimp (is this what MP means?).. I have access to fresh shrimp. Alternatively, you can get frozen shrimp as well.

Other good options are Freeze Dried Crickets (which are very expensive in my part of the world), Freeze Dried Meal-worm, Freeze Dried earthworm etc.

At 13", you can feed him once a day. AFAIK, Aros don't overeat, so you can keep feeding him shrimp till he stops eating while keeping a count. And the feed him the exact number of shrimp going forward. (You might want to repeat the counting exercise at least once a month to keep track of Aro's changing appetite.)

Also, (again, IMO), dark substrate brings out the best colors in most fish. I think the same applies to the Aro. So, I would recommend going for a dark (black) substrate.

Good luck,
Sid

Hmmm. thanks ea MP means market prawn... Ok then im doing the right thing :)

I'll have to check the price of the substrate first...
Narrows down to 4 choices:
No. Colour of fiberglass tank Colour of substrate
1 Black Black
2 Black Light brown(normal sand)
3 White Black
4 White Light brown(normal sand)

Which one will look the best? I want the tank to look good, not the fish :)

Thanks

What do you mean by "color of fiberglass tank"? Are you referring to the background color?

Assuming you are referring to the background color, I think (almost unanimously) the black background will be recommended over white (or lighter colors) for Arowanas.

So, the choice is narrowed down to just the color of the sand.

Check this video for a Black background+ black sand combination:

I think it looks fantastic, but that's just me..

Other options is Black background+white sand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fF5x9wEJK0&

This also looks good.

(I am currently thinking about upgrading my Malawi cichlid tank so the video above were in my bookmarks.. You can find similar video with Arowanas to give you a better picture.)

Cheers,
Sid

At that size I fed mine superworms and he went crazy for them! Really put on some quick growth. Market shrimp is another great great staple he should be eating. Cut fillets are great too... avoid crickets and feeders at this stage.

+1 for black background

Fiberglass tank is like an above ground pond...
I'm feeding mine feeder fish, market shrimp and mealworms.. because mealworms are easier to breed...

here: example of fiberglass tank.. this is blue...
