Now one of my daughters' is now into it. She has a 20 gallon, breeding guppies. I want my own again. I've been wanting to get a 90 or so gallon but I don't know what kind of fish to start with, So I've been putting off buying it. All this talk of "Cycleing the tank" first I've never heard of. Can anyone help........Please.
tyl089;920881; said:Hello, with a 90g, your choices are a lot. What kind of fish are you interested in keeping? Cichlids, livebearers, gouramis, salt water, or cold water?
You want it with plants or without? Predator only or community?
Do you want fish from a specific region? Africa, SA, or Asia?
Hope these questions will help you get started, and good luck.
Well, discus fish are cichlids, so you get two for one there. Discus are also pretty delicate in that they must have very clean water, that's soft and acidic. Some tank bred ones are hardier, and thrive in neutral water but i haven't heard about them adopting to hard and alkaline water yet. Alot of hobbyists also keep angel fish with discus or medium size tetras. Just remember that discus are peaceful and will not be able to stand agressive cichlids. Also, alot of the discus tanks i see are bare bottom to help keep it cleaner.mishelly111;922311; said:Hello there, Well salt water is very nice but a little out of my league money wise. I'd like some mid size, like Cichlids and I also really like the Discuss(Spelling??). They are very nice fish. I would love real plants but everytime I have tried real plants I get infested with snails. I even pre-treat the plants with the "Had-a-snail" stuff and still snails. I must say I have given up on the real plants. What would go well with Discuss?
Thanks for your help.

I have a ton of live plants, and will always have them. Very useful. Snails can be a bother, and i did have them. But the cichlids grew up, and now uses them as snacks. Try java fern. I recommend them because they are usually sterile, are big so you can easily check them for snails. Are tough and almost indestrucible and can grow either tall or spread out to cover your tank and don't need alot of light as well.
Hope the info helps, and GOOD LUCK.![]()

Made a mistake on the plants though. I use Annubias Barteri extensively; not Java Fern. Although Java fern are also good low maintenance plants that don't need alot of light.
The other plants i use are Villasanerias (spelling) or eel grass that need more stronger light, and some do carry snails but are also low maintenance, tolerate wide range of temp. I got them in my gold fish pond and they survived over the winter where temp fell below 30F.
Good Luck.
