For Christmas i got myself a gift certificate for a silver aro, and i finally got a ten gallon cleared out for him temporarily- just waiting for it to finish cycling so I can get the aro:D Just a few quick questions-

How long until he outgrows the ten gallon? I hope to have the 400 gallon ready in less than two months, will that buy me enough time? The aro is three inches long.

I'm going to assume plants would benefit me- would amazon sword and java fern work?

What food should i use as a staple?

Thanks,
Art

the 10g is a little small, but will do as a "baby place".
I do the same to my baby aro, now I'm moving it to a larger one. (from 27 liters to a 80 liters - for now)
as for the plants, i put some java fern in a piece of wood, but he takes the java all over the place (not intencionaly), but it seens to like it. I'm trying to make grow some riccia fluitans too.
and as for the food, I'm almost opening his mouth to eat some pellets, he only eats live foods (such as feeders, tenebrio molitor). When he was smaller, he loves artemias and now he doesn't even care (but the baby tilapias loves it)

that one word should tell you the answer :D
trust me they grow fast and a 10g barely works for the feeders
setting up a 400g will take time too
then it has to cycle
by then the aro probably out grew the 10g a while back
;)

Two months is estimated cycling time plus introduction of my larger fish. I won't get the silver aro for three weeks, so the aro will probably only be in the ten gallon for about a month.

The silver will be 6" within a couple months and needing a larger tank. What type tank mates are going to be with your 6" aro in that 400g? Your best bet is to raise the aro in a 55g upto about 10" and then introduce into the large tank with carefully selected tankmates.

Thanks. He'll be with a large pleco, several oscars, and a tiger shovelnose. I may add some other fish too along the way, but these are what I already have.

If I were, i wouldnt even get the aro until your 400g is setup. 10g is ridiculously small. get the aro the same day you set up your new tank. by the time the tank is done cycling, the should be ready to move on to a bigger tank.

if that wont work, at least get a 30g, it will give you some more time and they dont cost too much more

The aro won't be in the tank until the 400g is here... In fact, he probably won't be in it until after i have it and it's already cycling...

That aro will make a nice snack for your oscars, even if the oscars are the same size.
