Nice pics! Is that a European viper? I guess you know what your doing if your picking up that species. That snake isn't as poisionus as most vipers. Love the lizard pics, wish there were more native species near me.

unfortunately i wouldn't know what i was doing with regards to handling this species, it was someone else I was with. I guess its the european viper... it is found throughout europe, but the adder is the only venemous in the UK. I think if you'd got bitten, you'd be ok, but it would depend how you react, and i still wouldn't want to. Think the last death was in 1975 or something similar.
Yes that snakes is also called a European Adder. You should know what your doing if you handle any snake for that matter. The only poisionus snake that I've ever handled was a Copperhead once. I don't believe there has ever been any fatalities from that species but you can get pretty sick if you get bit. I was lucky and stupid.
venomous
no i was with someone who was a much more experienced herper than me, i just took the pictures and wrote down field notes for my own project
On a side note, my dog got bitten by one, and it was touch and go whether he would pull through.
Great herping! Where abouts in the UK are you from? I'm from the NW, and have looked for adders in some of the nature parks round here and found nothing
The lizards are awesome as well (that includes the slow worm). I never see any of these species up here!
Good work, thanks for sharing

I'm in gloucestershire. North west where? You could try going to your local ARG-amphibian reptile group, something to do, and will help you with places to go herping etc.
Great animals and pictures! I really grew to love the UK when I was stationed at Lakenheath. I never saw any herps, even though I constantly looked for them on base. Saw and caught hundreds of hedgehogs though.
