Some UK native herps

Thanks. That would be suffolk i think. Not sure what there is up there. I imagine grass snakes, adders, slowworms and common lizards

From Carlisle, Cumbria :) I aint seen much up here but sheep and cows! I've seen adders mentioned on park notice boards, but never actually seen one. Seen a couple of the lizards once near the Solway coast, I think. Pretty dull up here generally though!

it's still pretty cool up there i'd imagine, but i'm not sure it gets harder and harder to see them as the months go on as they start to disperse. Just have to look around south facing banks with a lot of course vegetation cover like brambles etc. thats your best bet. If they are on park notice boards, they should be around.

Nice finds!! I've seen loads of grass snakes and the odd slow worm, never an adder though. They are more dangerous to dogs than anything I believe.

when i was a boy (not that long ago):irked: you would find a slow worm under every stone you turned over,,, but now it can take weeks of looking,, i have heard some people say its down to the mink, im not sure about that but i did see a mink kill a adult duck:WHOA:

the american mink is an absolute w*nker. It is having a massive impact on water voles, and probably everything else. With those... it's shoot to kill. It's still like that in some places with slowworms. Although there isn't sufficient data (although im working on it) i think british herps are in decline. Fortunately they are getting some better press and there are growing numbers of people supporting the conservation of them.

Random fact: Hedgehogs have somewhat built up a resistance to adders venom.
