OK few questions....I know I need shells, sand, right pH, dH....Can someone tell me how to keep the pH and dH correct for shellies...I am most likely putting brevis, multi, or occies in this tank (20 gallon).

First what did the pH for your tank test as?? If it tests in a good range than you don't need to do anything but regular water changes and you should be fine. You really don't want to add anything to the tank unless you need to, you want to avoid fluctuations.

Just test your tap water and post up the tap readings and it will probably help us, help you better.

More than likely your tap is fine and you will probably only need to do regular water changes.

For me, my tap is fine for my freshwater fish and I don't add anything to the tank, I just do normal water changes. For you that might be a certain % every so many weeks that you prefer to do and just to stick to it and you should be fine. Also you can run tests on your tanks once a week also and determine if you should be changing water, etc.
