After a pair spawn, unless you already know their parenting skills, its generally a good idea to remove the male, and allow the female to raise the spawn.
I've had many pairs spawn and successfully raise fry together, but had just as many get trashed when the male got belligerent, ate the eggs and fry and killed the female maybe 50/50, and especially if it happens in a small tank..
I usually remove the male when he wanders off to the opposite side of the tank.

With bartoni above, I could always let the male and female stay with a spawn,
but with haitiensus if I didn't remove the male, the fry would cannabalize the male, eating gaping holes in his side

Removing the male is the better option if possible. Is that cannibalistic behavior species specific Duanes?

Andy Woods has had it happen with his pair once or twice, he removed the haitiensis fry.

My haitiensus were the most cannabalistic, if enough food isn't given many times throughout the day, because many cichlid fry will feed from the slim coat, its not a big jump, to start eating the parent. And my male hait would hardly ever do more than occasionslly shake the fry off. After the largest fry would reach an inch or so, they always started eating their smaller brothers and sisters if I wasn't providing constant food all throughout the day.. In the pic below, I believe you can see the chomping away on the male hait.
