i was just sitting here thinking and came to a conclusion....petsmart employees are stupid.....i lost a couple fish because of them including 2 silver aro's.....i get my water tested at petsmart and they always tell me what's wrong and tell me things to do and what medication to put in.....everytime i do what as they say my fish end up dying like 2-3 days later....i guesss i have to start testing the water myself......

I'm lucky, the petsmart employees here are pretty smart when it comes to fish. I've only had trouble with angelfish there, but other then that, I've gotten some pretty good fish there. That's where I got my jags, and every fish that I have bought from there, always eat when I feed them on Day 1.

"Be careful with generalizations," says MDC_Leviathan, who works at a PetSmart, but does agree that many co-workers could learn a little more about the animals in their care.

Thanks for sticking up for PsM there, FireMouth. I will say that PetsMarts everywhere seem to have only marginal success with angelfish. I don't know if its just the system we use for the tanks or they come from a bad distributer. (shrugs). I'll also say that before we discontinued them, we had excellent success with discus (at least my store did anyway). I can recall only one that died over a 3 year period. Still blows my mind.

Any store can have sub-par workers. It is important to get to know the people you deal with. Have a conversation, & listen to (perhaps not do) what they say. Ask questions that you already know the answer to, see if they BS or not.

Remember many (not all) chain pet store ( & LFS) employees are also learning as they go, your job as a consumer is to determine who you are dealing with, before following advice.

If you tell them about plasic scrubbies in a filter, & they say thats a cool idea, then you ask them if they think copper scrubbies would work & they say YES then run away fast.

Yes, you should test your own water. It's very easy. Just buy a master test kit. In general, most water problems can be corrected by simply doing a water change. You should never add medication to correct water parameters. Medications should only be used as a last ditch effort in fighting a disease.

Depends on the staff..

Sometimes the customers are stupid. ?

I've seen is first hand. Ignorant customers that "have been keeping fish since before I was born" coming in and telling me what they should do and how I was wrong. It took about a month of this **** before I threw my hands up and made it clear I didn't give a **** about anyone else's tanks other than mine. :mrsatan:

what does a pet smart look like? can someone post pix of one?
:/

I think it could be like "Pets Paradise" what we have in Australia.. but I have nfi, they never have cool fish only crappy crap fish.

There are some people that are very qualified at selling fish, they can be anywhere. Just because someone had a bad experience at one store, doesn't mean that all the stores are the same way. I would love to work at a pet store, but I probably would lose my job because I would be too honest about fish keeping.
