So I have two pairs of Pygos spawning in the same tank. They've been ultra aggressive for a couple weeks now. The one pair finally dropped eggs and the male has lost his mind. Last night he attacked a large chunk of driftwood...I mean he all-out, viciously attacked for about 5 minutes and literally shredded a 15'' piece. The female from the other pair shredded a 9' vine I had in the tank. The male from the first pair violently attacked my siphon as I was taking the eggs and then did something I've never heard of.

He went ballistic swimming around the tank attacking anything in his path. Gravel, rocks, driftwood, the glass and THEN went straight at the heater and bit the end of it off!

Maybe I've lived a sheltered life but I've never heard of, much less seen anything like that.

that's one crazy red you have, very protective father indeed.
too bad you didn't tape it down, which you should have done it for our sake :)

Would've been so sweet to witness

I wish to God I could've got him shredding the driftwood. It was the classic, Hollywood version of how Piranha are ''supposed'' to attack and it lasted 5 minutes or so. Biting the end of the heater off was just insane!

I've had these since they were pre-dime/dime sized and they've always been extremely mild mannered and tolerant of each other and even a few other tank mates like a 18'' Black Shark which did fine with them and two plecos I've had since before the Piranha and actually bullied the Reds.

The male is about 11'' long and about 2.5-3'' wide, a pretty impressive fish.

I'm thinking of building a ''huge'' tank [800+ gallons] and growing out the entire spawn and weeding out imperfect ones. I'd surely be the cool kid on the block with monster tank holding 300 or so babies. I almost lost interest in my Reds due to setting up a loach/Angelfish tank and a few other projects but this has revitalized my interest with them spawning.

wow thats pretty gnarley! cool fish. sup OH?

...I finally got the ''vicious attack fish'' I wanted when I got these guys, lol.

Not much new here. I'm still selling books but most of my time is still consumed by fishkeeping. I set up a 180 gallon with Angels and Clown Loaches so that's become my focus lately. I just bought a 90 gallon hexagon tank that I'm trying to figure what to do with. Originally I bought it for my Angels [and due to the fact it cost $20.] but am now thinking of setting it up as a reef tank.
IMO those are the only two viable choices for stocking a hex tank.

So how have you been? Have you become a married man?

I'd go with the reefer for the 90 hex. Sounds like a good size and corals don't need a lot of swimming room. I think I've been bitten by the salt bug as well.

I'm good man. I have in fact "tied the knot." We're going on 3 months of marital bliss =). I'm about to graduate from nursing school in about 6 weeks (if I can survive labor and delivery!) and I have recently been elected by my peers to deliver the commencement speech at our pinning ceremony, so Ive got a lot of good stuff going on. Glad to see you around the forum. We sent some RBP's your way the other day. Somebody in OH wanted to give away their P's.

OMG what a protective father :D did the otehr pair spawn ? can you post some pics of your fish ?

from what I've heard thats typical breeding behavior for p's. congrats! love your sig too.
