Hi there, I just moved about a month ago and had a 75, 90, 150 and 225 gallon to bring with me. Cycling went perfect for
every new tank except the 225 as the new fx5 I through on it didn't seem to get enough old bacteria whatever. Anyway, after awaking in the morning
to my beautiful 10" tigrinus dead as a doornail, realized things were awry and that the ammonia had spiked to 8.0+ ppm. My two cichla in the tank at the time
one 8" ocellaris and one 5" mono were gasping for air looking awful as well. After many w/c and labors to bring a bunch of other biomaterial into the new tank levels have been ideal now for over a week. Problem is now, although they look perfectly healthy, my two usually ravenous cichla are very reserved and barely eating. They look almost clumsy chasing feeders I gave them to try and entice their appetite. The larger one can catch them but he almost looks blind striking in the dark and the smaller mono who would swim everywhere now hides all day and I haven't seen him eat in a long while. Not overly concerned because they are eating a little, but their attitude is so damn different from striking everything and all that entered the water before them. Just wanted to make sure ammonia poisoning isnt known for blinding fish? thats almost what it looks like my bass cant see anymore although I do have new lights on tank as well when it used to be very dark. Do you think they are just recovering still and pissed about the move and will come out of it? I know I had a flagtail once that would run from me for almost 6 months after moving him tanks once and some fish are sensitive like that. Just really want to make sure nothing wrong with my bass or if anyone had ideas / similarities if they had bad ammonia spikes or bass that acted very different for a long period after being relocated. Any advice welcome thanks!

I would keep with water changes and Add salt. That's a good thing they are eating. Just keep up with new water and salt!

Your very lucky they made it at all. It will likely take a long time for them to fully recover.

Ok, thanks they actually seem to be doing a lot better. The big guy is almost back to normal and the smaller mono is coming out a lot more. I know the ammonia is terrible for them as my dead tig confirmed, but they only endured the spike for an 8 hour period or so so I didnt think it was that bad. They defintely have no visual signs of damage or scarring, but if that is true about the eyes getting ammonia burned that could be it and they need to recover. Ive never had any bad experiences with it before does ammonia poisoning hit cichla extra hard or just that kills all fish in general? Guess I did not realize how serious their condition may have been from comments....?

and to mr8 no fin damage at all, but yes I did see my ocellaris's eyes looking strangely cloudy the day after the spike, should they recover with proper care if it is an eye burn case or are they blinded :(? My other fish in the tank two crenicichla sp. a wolf fish and flagtail showed no symptons or funny behavior at all through whole experience besides looking sick with the others when the spike happened and was super high,,,are cichla more susceptible

just add salt and do water changes. Don't go down to like pet smart or ur LFS and pay $13 for a tub of salt that u can only use a couple times, go down to home depot, get the water softener salt, the crystalized ones not the pellet ones, they crystalized ones are the same exact thing as what u get from API, Top Fin or any other kind of aquatic companies for like $5 for a 50lbs. Also get like a plastic container and put the salt in that, oh and the dosage is the same exact as with reg. aquarium salt. and slowly lower the container in ur tank, let the salt dissolve into the tank, will last a long time and also ur bass will love it, they might ever hover over it, kinda like a salt bath. LMK if that helps!! P.S This salt last longer too!!

is the salt to help them recover or cover new ammonia threats? Cause now my level are all perfect except nitrIte is at .50 ppm as everything evens or will that help them recover? Thanks mr8 I think thats probably what happened because there eyes look good now, but there was definitely a strange cloud in them that had nothing to do with water and it literally looks like they just cant see their feeders anymore. Like when its near them and their instincts on feel and water currents etc. come in they snatch them up no problem, but when they are swimming around or first go in it really just seems like they cant see them anymore and dont even notice even when I go to touch them when before although friendly they would still swim away. Will monitor closely still at let you know they seem to be doing much better though thank you everyone!
