i've had the oscar since he was around 2", almost 3 years now. he's never been fed live foods other than worms and insects, and gets NLS pellets as a staple. originally it was just the oscar and the severum and 2 plecos were added in early 2010. plants have been in the tank since february of this year, around the same time i started off by adding 15 giant danios as a test dither with the oscar. he chased the crap out of them for about a day but never caught any. after that it was like he just gave up all hope. a couple weeks later i tried 5 bolivian rams and with the danios swimming in the free space he never even paid any attention to the rams. i went away for 3 weeks between april and may and my wife had to care for the tank in my absence, but to my surprise they were all still alive when i got back. the stock worked out well, but i didn't like that the danios were not really part of the "biotope", so wanted to introduce more amazon/SA fish to replace them. i added 15 lemon tetras in mid may, he got one of those the first day so i got another to replace it shortly after. at the beginning of june i added 30 black neon tetras, again he got one of those the first day but none after that. last week petsmart was having a sale on the lamp eye tetras for $1ea, so i brought the giant danios in to a local LFS for store credit and picked up 15 of those and added them.
the tank looked too crowded, especially since the lemon tetras and black neon didn't school as much and it just looked a little too crazy for my taste with so many fish. i removed 5 of the lemon tetras, 4 of the black neons, and 5 of the lamp eye tetras.
stocklist now is the oscar, severum, plecos, 5 bolivian rams, 10 lemon tetras, 10 lamp eye tetras, and 25 black neons. i don't know why the oscar suddenly decided to leave the plants alone when i put them in this last time in february, he never tolerated plants when he was smaller and was far more aggressive towards tankmates (oscars, SDs, festivum)
