I think if the oscar is older, well fed, and personality is on the less predatory, and the tank is pretty large this can work more than just this occasion, cause i've had luck with some smaller cichlids and catfish.

The size difference is pretty large. He was probably around 6" in the first pic and about 10.5" or so now. I used those pics cause the pose is almost identical. I started feeding him the Hikari Gold and had to leave on vacation for 3 weeks while my girlfriend fed the new food. By the time I returned the lower half of him was as orange as the second pic. He's still getting more orange even after about 6 months on the new food. He was just on the green bag (forget the name) of Hikari pellets before I switched to the Gold.
thought i'd give a quick update. i moved the red eyed tetras to my 29gal planted tank because i thought it looked too crowded in the 125g. everyone else is still doing well. two of my bolivian rams spawned and laid eggs today as well, althought it was a fluke and i wasn't trying to get them to spawn. still interesting nonetheless. the oscar doesn't really seem to care for being bullied by a 3" ram defending the territory, it should be an interesting night to see if everyone makes it out unscathed.
