Today I went to feed my Jack some frozen Mysis shrimp and she wouldn't eat them, now this struck me as odd because she always eats everything. So just to see if she would eat I threw in some Omega One Cichlid pellets as they are one of her favorites other than earthworms.

She ate them, but much slower than she normally does then I noticed she is swollen right in front of her pelvic fins. I have never seen anything like this before, does anybody know what is wrong and what I can do to help her.

This is the best pic I could get really quick, let me know if I need to get a better one.

This is what I would do if it were my fish.

Fast her for a day and start offering peas. If that isn't enough, bump the temp and do a big water change. If that still isn't enough, and the rest of your fish are tolerant, add some epsom salt.

Hopefully it's just a little blockage. If it's bacterial you'll need meds but try the gentle approach first since stress makes it worse.

Thanks Knifegill, I will try fasting and give her peas. Right now I give her Omega One veggie flakes once a week, and then I also give her skinned peas or skinned lima beans once a week. Getting her to eat the peas shouldn't be a problem as she gets them at least twice a month. i won't have to worry about tank mates as she is a solo fish.

someone told me about the pea thing too but i dont remeber what it does its been a long time.

Before I went to work this morning I watched my Jack poo, and it was brown. She had also left a couple of turds in front of her cave as well. I changed her water last night and vacuumed the gravel. She has pooped twice now so I know she is not constipated. She is not showing the normal signs of parasites either, other than not eating the mysis shrimp she eats everything else I feed her.

When I got home tonight the swollen area was the same as it was when I left. I did notice that she now has 3 sores in the middle of the swollen area in front of her pelvic fins. she also ripped a chunk off her gill plate, I think she was trying to scratch her swollen area and tore it off on a rock or something. Other than the incident last night she acting totally normal other then the swelling.

I am totally confused and have no idea what is wrong with my fish. I posted some more pics of her swollen area. Although you can't really make out the sores as they don't show up very well in the pics because her underside is so white. You can see where she tore her gill plate in the last picture.

Your description sounds like a possible bacterial infection. I'd go with a maracyn treatment, but I don't know whether you should use maracyn 1 or maracyn 2. We'll have to wait for Lupin or somebody with more experience treating illness. My fish quit getting sick a long time ago! :( :)
