I run some air in my tank just in case as well...

the thing is i kinda have a peve against air pumps. i like hearing the water trickle, but the vibration of an air pump is hidous.... believe me the bio wheel pro has it coverd. almost 90% of the tank has small air bubbles floating around...

small air bubbles in the water do not help with the O2 exchange. The movement of the air bubbles from the air stones causes the water to follow to the surface where it gets O2. Super tiny air bubbles (microbubbles) that tend to cling to objects can actually block surface area on the gill plates reducing the amount of O2 the fish is getting.

im still getting ammonia spikes. the ammonia level is just under .25ppm. should i do a huge water change? or should i just keep doing 5 gallons at a time?

I would use some type of ammonia detox like prime or amquel plus. I would also add an air stone for the duration of the treatment to increase the water movement to the surface. When ammonia is present it is hard on a fishes gills making them less efficient at removing o2 with their gills.

With any spike you always do large water changes. Small ones don't really get rid of the ammonia.
