Didn't you mean 10 gal ??
1 gal is to small, even for a grow out tank.
put some corys, the armatus are very nice looking.

I'd have to agree with BaTsBR. A 1 gal isn't a grow out tank, it's a planter. It's not even big enough for a Betta in my opinion. That's sad to do to a fish. Corys belong in groups anyway. And to keep a 1 gal stable as far as water quality? Too hard. WalMart has plain 10 gal tanks for $10. I'd get him one of those and show him how to properly 'grow out' a fish.

aint a 1g way too small for anything?

Never mind the size of the tank, how big is your sons room?!? You can't grow a child out in a rubbermaid ya know.

But seriously, depending on the age of your son and how into fish he is maybe you should get him a "real" tank. One that he can learn to maintain properly. I would imagine the 1gal is pretty much impossible to keep at consistent correct water parameters. If he doesn't have the space in his room for a bigger tank and doesn't seem to want to make some than maybe he isn't as into fish as you.

i'm just curious what kind of filtration do you have on the big 1gal?
the smallest filters i've seen are for a 5gal...

it came with a filter and i have to do water changes quite regularly, it is a grow out my red devil in my 20 gal grow out would kill either one of the bumble bees in a heartbeat he would think i was putting in a big dark feeder, and he's only 2 inches. In my opinion everything is a grow out when dealing with monster fish.
