TDS is 500+, Ph is 7.1-8.0, etc etc
8.0 is generous. I remember testing water at the lfs I work at and it was closer to 8.5 -8.7. It's like the water here is loaded with baking soda.
 
That's crazy. Pull a water report it will break it down. RO is not bad, but its a huge pain over your midevil. Standard ro system is like $80 and only produces 50-75gpd so that requires a container with heater to hold whatever amount of water you change....you can see where this leads. Beautiful fish though.
 
Most people wont run more than 50% RO mix. The hardiness depends on the bloodline, there are a few great breeders in US producing some very hardy lines, the imported lines seem to struggle IME
 
If you want to keep smaller cichlids looks at some of the cryptoheros. They are smaller and probably more hardy than the rams. I have sajica and chetumalensis. Colorful and lively
