i just got my stimulus check back from the gov. i have 7,600 extra dollars because i bought a townhome.. ok so what does that mean? 300 GALLONS BABY!!!! yes i will be buying my first real monster tank 300 gallons. so now comes stocking it. im thinking caribes. i already have 2 but there like 6 inches so i wanna grow out some babies then add my big boys. and i was thinking piraya. i wanna mixed shoal. any opinions on how many of each? this is my dream and its coming true!!! if i can get some terns ill add them too. also for filtration i was thinking 2 fx5 filters and a small wet/dry. so ill have my 9 inch bdr in my 125, a 300 filled with some sort of shoal(looking for opinions), a 60 with a solo 6.5 inch rhom. a 60 empty, and a 40 breeder empty... ill eventually fill them when my dream tank is done. i feel like a kid waiting for x mas. :nilly: please give me your opinion on stocking!

Hi.

300 gal sounds by far the dream of many of us dude.:headbang2

It seems plenty of water but as soon as you realize there is no space for many fish if you're talking about piraya.

Piraya is a huge fish that can grow almost twice as big than a cariba or a red. It is said that piraya as full grown individual would need 100 gal per life. So if you can make the shoal of your dreams taking juveniles caribas reds, terns and piraya sound rather good but after some time you could end up just with 3 pirayas for example....:irked:

Fair is to say that pirayas don't get their full size within a night..

So regarding this, I would plan an stocking for life since the beginning you know? I wouldnt like to get rid of fish that had been with me for long time...

I would say 3 of 4 caribas 3 or 4 reds and one piraya would be a nice stocking for life but that's me.

Cheers.

thats really sad :( i like piraya alot but i dont want em eatin my caribes!

i really dont want any reds but i have one thats 4 inches that will eventually be included in my shoal.

so if its all caribes one red and one piraya. what are the chances my piraya will go crazy one night and eat everyone?? that scenario is freaking me out!

It really depends on their sizes. Just make sure all of them are about the same size when you put them in your 300 gal and that's it. If you manage this detail i think you can get away with it.

Cheers.

go with a bunch of caribe!! thats my vote at least. post pictures once you get it up and running!

+1 to that.

yeah I like all one kind of fish personally. to each their own i guess, but even when I had community tanks, more than one kind of schooling fish broke up the aesthetic. I like caribes because they look cool, are a lil more aggressive, a little more rare.

Tony, congrats on the townhouse purchase and the fat check you just got :D
don't think you'll be able to house too many pirayas in the 300 for life 3-5 max I would say. I say go with caribes you can house 8-12 in there for life, IMO.

Check out these threads here just to give you an idea. the guy has a 300g with 8 full grown caribes and a common wolffish, you can probably have few more without overstocking.

or if you really want pirayas, build yourself a 1000g (or larger is possible) pond with a large viewing window in the basement or something similar, probably will still be cheaper than buying a brand new 300g tank and stand.

I think this guy doesn't know what he's doing. It is as if you kept a young grizzly bear with a group of young lions... Sooner or later they'll kill each other....

If those caribas don't kill that wolf now that they can when that wolf gets 20" he is going to finish all the cariba shoal....

With all my respect that guy is just a dumba**s with a lot of money...

maybe but so far its working. just hope he keeps an eye on them at all time and remove the wolf before either on of them get hurt.
on the other hand the tank gives Tony a good idea on the set up

A good setup, can't denied it but can't advice Tony to try that kind of stock. The caribas are good and the mala is also good but keeping them together aint good at all man. It doesnt matter if it has worked for that guy so far, that combination is a time bomb...

Cheers.
