South american cichlid amount in one tank

Usually when a pair of Central American cichlids set up a breeding area, it is about 4' X 4' square. Though a 55 gal is 4 ft long, it is only 1/4 of that space wide, and in reality, it is about the size of a puddle.
Beside territorial concerns, water quality can be an issue in such a compact space.
I would think with 4 or 5 adult Thorichthys meeki in a 55 gal, a regime of 30%-40% water changes every other day would seem reasonable, no matter how extensive the filtration is.

how come i have to do a water change so often?

What he said above.
And think of it this way....
if you put 5 big guys in a bathroom and only allow them to flush a toilet once per week, that's about the same as 5 adult fish in a 55, and changing the water is flushing the toilet.....
Filters only take waste out when you clean them, (some of it breaks down)but letting stuff build up in a filter is a bit like sweeping stuff under a rug, its out of sight, but not gone, its still in the water.
