So I now have a pretty much free 29 gallon tank and I was pondering putting SA cichlids in this tank. I was looking for something small and hardy that I could breed. First off though my pH out of my tap is 7.2. Would this be too high to BREED south american cichlids? I was thinking a pair of bolivian rams or Apistogramma cacatuoides? Any other suggestions or advice welcomed.

There are LOTS of good options with an empty 29 :)!

Of apisto's there are over 50 different species!

Granted, i am a bit biased since i love these little guys myself, but really, i doubt you'll be dissapointed if you decide to setup a nice planted tank with some good scaping and any pair of apistos!

Cool good to know. Do you know any common hard species good for begginners as far as apistos go? I am also really liking the bolivian rams.

I was also thinking of adding small tetras and corys. Will the fish be able to defend thier brood from catfish like corys and/or small plecos?

I doubt they will be able to fend off plecos and catfish. I wouldn't risk it personally!

Well for me i really like the F0 Hongsloi, but i think agasizzi is easyer to come by, and they show some really bright colors. Don't know how hard they are to breed though!

Also Laetacara curviceps would work in there as well. Or even the dwarf pike cichlid Crenicichla regani.

you should breed dovii or umbee in there................... lol kidding i second the ram idea i have always thought they are cool just never had a tank i could put them in where they wouldnt get eaten

I found that bolivian rams were really sensitive and never really thrived in my aquarium. you should look into flag cichlids (mesonauta species) they're beautiful and would do very well in a 29 gallon.

Alot of options...

I really like bolivian Rams but if they are really that sensative im not sure they will be a perfect fit but we will see. I do like Crenicichla regani but don't they only eat live food? I would like something that can take pellets. I also like keyhole cichlids and Laetacara curviceps.

I kept BR rams and mine were hardy. They even paired up, but I didn't know anything about breeding at the time. They get pretty big too. I saw a pair at the LFS in baltimore not long ago that were every bit of 4-5". Blue rams are pretty sensitive but BR rams are tough.
