I Just bought a new Leaf Fish got him set up in my 45G tank. He is happy and eating already :p Its cool to watch him make goldfish disappear :WHOA: Anyways, the question I have is if I can put a school of fish will the Leaf fish eat when he is hungry or will he just keep on eating and bloat himself :s

Thanks in advance!

Enough with the goldfish. Start by deworming your leaf fish and then get to feeding him fish worth eating. Thiaminase is present in all cyprinids, and goldfish are abused, infected and contagious with anything that has a name and things that don't. So stick with livebearers and other species instead.

The leaf is an obligatory piscivore and will gladly eat any fish it can, and could die trying to eat fish it can't. Choose fish too large to be a meal and too friendly to pick on him. Other lurking predators like belonesox would be great.

I agree on all counts there. Good breakdown bro.

I hate goldfish and was thinking using guppies of mollies to stock the tank for feeding that way he has a constant supply of food. The question was weather or not it would be okay for him to have a constant supply of food or if it would be better to drop the food in one by one when it comes to feeding time. as for tank mates, I was thinking about a couple Angles, a larger catfish on the bottom of the tank, and maybe a Placo.

Oh and I'll take any other suggestions for tank mates and any other tips from people who have had Leaf fish. Give me ideas guys! I'm thinking of turning the tank into a blackwater tank with almond leaves and pleanty of drift wood. what do you think???

also pics on the way

Angles can get nasty sometimes and can constantly pick on things... I would say avoid cichlids... I would go with a school of teras or danoi.

has anyone else had any leaf fish??? any other suggestions???

I wish I knew the exact answer as to whether or not this species would gorge itself to death or just eat a few and stop at that. But I don't. *Bump* for more info!
