South American Lungfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
WOW!! that lungfish is awesome i see your holding it in a lot of pictures is it friendly like that? does it come up to you to be held?
Thanks! It doesn't really care if I grab it or lift it. I think their eyesight is too poor to actually see me and come up to me. Australian Lungfishes however definitely would come up to you and "beg" for food (I believe they have better eyesight).
That’s amazing mate! I had no idea they grew so thick so far….though I’ve never kept one. Love the yellowy colored freckles on its face when it was smaller. That small Dat in a few pics looks terrified 😂
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Yeah I'm surprised myself. It's still got a long way to go until it reaches adulthood. Probably will be the size of a 500mL water bottle by then. I wish they kept their little yellow speckles, that would probably entice more people to keep them.
Gorgeous species of fish that definitely needs more love than it gets! You have an amazing specimen
Thank you. Yeah, they are a really underrated species of lungfish for sure. Hopefully, this thread will inspire others to keep one if they can provide for it.

Not sure why I wasn't able to put 5 quotes or quote some of your guy's comment individually. Strange.

jjohnwm jjohnwm Thanks! I will definitely try to update from time to time when I notice some growth. As for growth rate, I think it will vary from individual to individual and other factors like water quality, water change volume/frequency, diet, feeding frequency, etc.

RyanScanner RyanScanner Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing more growth. Will be mind blowing to compare its day 1 to its adult size.

Super cool fish. Seems very well habituated to your setup and care.
The juvenile coloration with the yellow marks was very nice, but unfortuately it goes away with maturity.

Hao Hao not sure what to like more and how to give multiple likes. Both types are amazing and you kept them well.

I wonder how do you cover the aquarium where to iu keep these. Mike sometime get spooked and then it's a stampede in aquarium.

Solid muscle these are and if they hit you can feel

I just have an eggcrate sheet on top and couple of water bottles on top along the edges/corners. (Probably not enough if it actually wanted to escape to be honest). Fortunately, my lungfish is fairly calm for the most part (unless someone accidentally bites it during feeding).

June 17th, 2025 - quite a monster now if you compare it to day 1!

July 2nd, 2025 - it’s been in a different 40g breeder (no bichirs). Hopefully it can eat more and grow more here.
