south american red tail cat question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When the whiskers are damaged or ripped off they can grow back with sub branches on them.Ours has these and I dont think it looks too bad,a catfish expert told me to cut them back before the branching off and it would grow back normally.I dont personally believe in intervention like this but he said it would be o.k.

agreed. The wiskers should grow back . Even if it doesn't as long as it doesnt effect the fish I think it should be fine. I believe rtc have poor vision they use their wiskers to find food especially in the dark. If the whiskers did get torn off Melifix should help it heal alot faster.

there are no sore or wounds of any type. I cant even see where the whiskers are supposed to be. there are not even bumps.

you and i both know tt that was no immature attitude

My RTC is the same way. I didn't realize it until I went to show my wife how he has 3 pairs of whiskers like all Pimelodids. I thought for sure she was crazy when she said he only had two pairs. He was 3" at the time and is now a solid 7" and they aren't showing any signs of growing back. I wouldn't worry too much though cuz my guy has no trouble finding food.

My little Rtc lost some of whiskers when it's was smaller, because I had a mean synodontis. Three whiskers has grown back + one of the has two subwhiskers so it locks like a cross. :screwy:

Delgado, maybe it was not immature and I know it reflects a genuine concern for properly keeping fish but the way your statement came across was confrontational and rude. People don't usually respond well to that kind of thing. Wouldn't it have been more effective to just ask if she was aware how big the cats get and to suggest that people do their research before buying a fish. If we can get more people to do this it will save a lot of grief all around, If enough people start doing it we might eventually see fewer RTCs, TSNs, and Pacus being sold.

^^^ guppy, always the voice of reasoning. :clap.

Red tails are awesome monster fish, but alas, I don't have the space for one :(
