i wouldnt if i were you its not so much the tank size its the water parameters africans like hard basic water whereas S/A prefer soft acidic water im sure if you went exactly neutral (pH 7 )you could keep both of em alive but neither would really "thrive"

Agreed.

People forget their is a difference between South American cichlids (Discus, geos, etc) and Central American cichlids (Nicaragua, convicts, etc).

Centrals naturally originate in much more alkaline areas.

I personally have kept both with no problems (well, no more than keeping a regular cichlid tank).

South american cichlids also for the most part get bigger, more territotial, and more aggressive than MOST africans.. alongside the different water parameters mentioned.

I have a JD with my africans. No Problems. Also have kept a few 4 inch africans in a large lagoon with about 10 full grown CA/SA, mostly oscars.

I have a pink tilapia living with an Oscar, Texas, Mayan, Nicaraguan, and Severum with no problems. Tilapia are very tolerant of various water conditions and big enough to hang with the Americans. I have also known people that kept Jewels with Americans as well. Some species might be more difficult to mix.
