South Americans and africans

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it depends what kind of Africans.....for example, I think in a large tank you can keep CA cichlids with some of the large haps

the water paramaters are not a problem with captive bred fish...you just got to make sure they have similiar diets. i wouldnt put in mbuna with an oscar for the sole reason they need a plant based diet and would be all too happy to eat whatever you give the oscar which in the long run could be detrimental

Well most people would say no, but me on the other hand, i keep a 120 with 10 electric yellows and 10 severums. never had a single problem, they are all happy and healthy.
So it depends on the fish, but its up to you.

If the fish are wild caught.. not liekly to work. If they are captive bred. You might be able to get away with mixing the two cichlids. I've personally never had long term luck in keeping SA/Africans together. I've done it with juvis with success. But the africans always end up beating the crud out of the SA's as they where smaller and swifter then the SA's where. I've never kept any of the larger Africans. Your balanceing 2 very different biomes. so neither type are going to get "perfect" conditions. They have evolved in these waters, a few generations of captive breeding isn't going to breed it back out of them. But they can survive, and obviousely breed in less then their natural habitat. whether it's "ethical" or not is certaintly debatable.

I'de go with perhaps some of the less aggresive african species you can find if your going to mix SA's and I'de keep one SA and a few different types of Africans ( no pairs, preferably females)

that is a horrible example, 10 severums alone are waaaaay too much for that tank anyway. they are happy and healthy for now perhaps, but definitely not long term

welll thanks guys, but FYI I've had them together for over a year now lol, they seem to be doing great. Maybe because of the tank size??

Not just looking at the living conditions which many have above mentioned, its also atheistic as well...

I find that it makes a tank look a bit "messy" as well... they don't look like they all fit with each other...
