Sp.Faranah vs Faranah lap.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw sp. dabola cause it has to many vertical bars compared to other faranah laps, at that time i had two faranah laps and the vertical bars didnt go all the way toward the neck area.

Oh yeah i know why you thought that i was just pointing out how we all see something different sometimes

Oh yeah no doubt it doesnt resemble and endli at all. At the time we were debating whether it was a faranah lap or what was thought to be an sp.faranah. catch locations discussions are always my favorites because like you say without DNA testing we really can only speculate.

I too am more comfortable calling it a lap as well. But to play devil's advocate koloton/koliba are laps and still arent described theres even a question if there is any difference between the two.
Lol see my absence is showing already, last I remember we were wondering if it was endli or lap or something new and which it was closer too. I agree with Troy as I said originally it's a variant of lap imo. The only real reason to speculate it's something else is the pattern from my knowledge, being different than the laps we were used to, but that is so easily debunked by not only bichirs species but many others, as we know patterns, colors, and size can be affected by variants. We would need more definitive traits, like scale counts.

As far as koloton and koliba I didn't have either so never challenged anyone really. Imo they were laps, hence no describing needed, just variants that showed different greens. Just like the Nigerian generally has a duller green.

Sp. Dabola always confused me. Some looked like endlis, some like a new species. I think that confusion starts with the sellers source or even the seller, makes us speculate when it isn't needed, such as questioning if a variant of endli is an endli at all then further feeding the confusion by selling an jndesrcibed fish under the same name, probably selling majority stock from there originally as sp dabola, sales tactic. Then they started with the dabola endli eventually IIRC. So with dabola, I think there's an undescribed soecies, but I think some are endli. But that one confuses me indeed.

There was some testing done awhile ago. I cant remember what member donated his polys to a university. Preliminary results were showing that sp.dabola was its own species where as in the past it was thought to be a natural hybrid. Nothing concrete came of it though i thought i heard funding dried up i could be wrong though

Interesting. I had sold mine to a university he showed me what they were doing, but it had more to do with understanding evolution from water to land.

Thats pretty cool man. Did they ever follow up with you and share their findings ?

I think this goes back to last years debate and like unsaid butni js been out of bichirs for a while theres a blurred line I think there does exist a sp dabola but in also think some f laps are close in looks and get lumped in. Beautiful fish either way. And reading fb between J jaws7777 and A African man this is a lap
