Hi I am new to this forum. a bit of background.
I have been keeping fish on and off for about 20 years including reef planted aquaria and miscellaneous. My Specialty if I have one is taking a select group of fish, creating a visually stunning setting and bringing the animals to peak and robust health. I have finally purchased my first large aquaria (for me)
75 gallons. currently
ph 7.8
temp 74
amonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate <10
GH 12
KH 8
hardware
fluval 405 with standard media
Aquaclear 110 with natural spong and charcoal ( Ill talk about the spong in a moment)
fine sand base with rockwork of slate, granite and shale
inhabitants 10 3 medium size (3" or larger) and 7 small so fa no aggression
tank is re-do from 37 tall full cycled so no issues there.
Jack Dempsey 4"
Labidochromis caeruleus x 2 2"
Pseudotropheus demasoni x 1 4"
Melanochromis auratus x1 3"
Pseudotropheus zebra x 1 1"
Labidochromis caeruleus. x 1 1.5"
Pseudotropheus crabro) x2 2
PSEUDOTROPHEUS LOMBARDOI x1 1"
I use natural sponges in the HOB filter 1/2 submerged. it provided 2 benefits.
works like a wet to dry and the natural nooks and crannies are like live rock in that they have small anaerobic areas inside that a very good at eliminating nitrites. in fact the previous list lived for 6 months in a 37 gallon with barley measurable nitrites even with heavy feeding and q/month 20% changes.
Now present to you all the closest I have ever had as a blank slate.
what to do? I am willing to return fish and change decor. my tap water is extremely soft with ph of 6.8. my preference is for personality size and beauty

Ok so wait. What are you asking here? You want a full do-over? change the stock list? Also I'm confused as to how many fish you actually have. is it 8, 10 or 18? Your params are great and the stock list is good aside from the jack dempsey which needs to go, he'll end up taking out the rest of your fish. Filtration looks good. Sponges are great. Most people here use them including myself. But anyways, welcome to MFK man! Post up some pics of the tank to we can see what you're working with!

SOrry if I wasn't clear. looking for suggestions to fill out the tank. I am open to anything including complete re-do. I have connections that allow me to return specimens. I say this because I want to hear all ideas. I have 7 fish total the first number after the name is the qty the second number is the length. In the past I confess to bad spur of the moment decisions. AKA the JD. so I want a little help to keep it realistic and healthy..'makes sense?

nice setup, as somebody already said getting rid of the JD would be a good place to start, i've never kept africans so i can't really tell you anything as far as what else to stock it with unless you re-did it to something else, regardless welcome to MFK

Id go african or reef. SA tanks are too empty in my opinion if not over 200 gallons. One fish, or a pair in a 75 isn't visually appealing to me personally.

I like the setup! You could do new world or old world in there. I'm more of an SA/CA guy as well. But unlike richie_elp , I love a single fish tank. I have two already and am about to set up another 75 with just a single fish. But thats just a matter of opinion. I like african tanks too though. Tang tanks are my favorite to do with african setups.

If I were personally seting up a 75 for multiple fish, I would do smaller SA/CA's. Curviceps, Festivums, Firemouths, Rainbow Cichlids maybe a Sevrum as a single larger fish. You can still get a good number of fish in a 75 going CA/SA but you can definately do more numbers wise with africans. It's all in what YOU like and prefer.

I like centrals personally but it's all in what you like. That jack does not beling with africans. But you could do a single fish, oscar, RD/midas. Or you can go with little ones like shell dwellers, rams, kribs, firemouths. You have many options, good luck.

You can do the shellies she's talking about with a tang setup for african cichlids.
